Charades

You may have noticed a lack of posts on SIO recently. We’ve been on something of a sabbatical lately. However, you can always count on at least one post a week, if not more. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Today’s big news was the beginning of the Winter Semester. Among the more interesting-looking classes I’ve got is Criminal Justice 101. Ah yes, 101. It hearkens back to the grand old year of 2001. 50 young, nervous freshmen all jammed into one tiny little room in Mackinac Hall (back in the day you’d never see more than 30… thanks to our ridiculous governor, GVSU has been forced to increase its class sizes). A boistrous female instructor, 5 years out of grad school and sporting a thick canadian accent with hints of Virginia, assures the class she is everybody’s best buddy ol’ pal and that we’re going to have a hey-diddly-awesome term. After assuring the class we’d be getting out early, she takes 45 minutes to get through the syllabus - something quite new to everybody in the class except me (if I had a dollar for every syllabus I’ve had to look at, I could buy the freaking school). She then insists on doing the standard name-major-random stuff survey, and then, already 5 minutes overtime, tells everybody to sign the sign-up sheet before leaving. Imagine 50 freshmen in a small room simultaneously trying to pack up their stuff, hand in a paper, and look for the sign-up sheet. I almost saw these words on the whiteboard: Thanks for coming, and you only have 4 minutes to get to your next class which is in the next county (Au Sable county, to be precise). Welcome back, chumps.
